As a hobby, I rescue old photos that have identification on them, & post the information on genealogy sites. In creating this page, I'm hoping that more people will be able to see what I'm doing and find "long lost" family members.

Welcome to my Rescued Family Treasures page, guestbook. I'd like to thank you for stopping by.

I started doing rescues when a bible, from my FORDHAM line, was placed & sold on eBay. I didn't know how to eBay back then. Someone posted to a genealogy message board that it was on eBay, so I went to the site. I found the message after the close of the sale. The seller did help and put me in contact with the buyer. I contacted him and offered him double what he paid for it. He declined my offer, saying "It was a gift for a friend". This bible contained family information and a photo of the cousin of my gr. gr. gr. grandmother, Lucretia Fordham Ketchum. I felt a terrible loss over this and that's when this whole thing started.

I rescue old photos, documents and such items, that have identification in or on them. Then I post these to genealogy sites on the internet in the hopes of getting them back into the hands of family. Since starting this in 2002, I've been able to place many of these treasures and hope that using this page, that I'll be able to place many more. I am currently holding well over 400 photos (closer to 500 now), and a few documents. Not everything is posted, yet.

I've found that I can only put so much information on the photos, so if you have any questions, like where the photo was taken, send me a note. I'll try to answer as soon as possible.

This hobby is "self funding". I only ask what I paid for the items, postage the the cost of a sturdy mailer (usually) to keep them safe while being shipped. I make no profit and when I place something, I can then rescue more. I accept personal check (drawn on U.S. bank or credit union), US Postal Money Orders or you can send payment through PayPal. Types of Early Photographs

The type of photograph in an album helps to date the album

Daguerreotypes (ca 1839)

Photography in USA began circa 1839 but not many are found before 1854.
Ambrotypes (circa 1854)

The ambrotype was a glass negative backed with black material so it appeared as a positive image
Tintypes (ca 1855)

The Ferrotype process (tintypes) was introduced in the United States in 1855. It substituted an iron plate for glass and is one of a kind. No copies could be made from a tintype.

Carte de Visite or CDVs (ca 1859)

CDV stands for carte de visite. CDVs replaced ambrotypes, producing a card 2.5 by 4" CDVs arrived in the United States around 1859, on the eve of the Civil War (1861-1865). On June 30, 1864 a tax on photographs, ambrotypes, daguerreotypes and other "sun-pictures" went into effect. Tax Revenue Stamps had to be placed on the backs of photographs from that date (1864) until August 1, 1866. This helps date CDVs taken in this time period.
Cabinet Cards (circa 1870)

CDV’s were replaced in the 1870s by Cabinet Cards which were on a larger 4 by 6" card.

I'm sure that at this time, I have no ambrotypes or daugerreotypes. I do have a few tintypes and lots of carte de viste & cabinet cards. Please check out the albums and enjoy the slide shows. Please be sure to sign my guestbook too!

I will be seeing my friend from the Caywood line tomorrow and see if she recognizes anyone in the picture. Her mom lived in Indiana all of her life.
